Counselor Feedback

Dear A., You asked for some feedback. I was going to provide it anyway but I was delighted when you asked. It’s a sign of your professionalism and your genuine concern and passion for your work. As I've come to know and respect you, I expect nothing less. You’ve chosen well in terms of your profession. You're good at this. A few years ago I read an article in the New York Times about people in the caring professions. I loved it and gave a copy to my dear friend, whom I consider to be the best counselor I have met in the 40 years that I've been working with various counselors. I'd like to share it with you, as well. It's called " The Pets in my Practice " In the third-to-last paragraph, the author reveals what he describes as "greatest influence on the healing process in psychotherapy." I won't reveal it here, since it's best stated in context. But I will say that it's something that you've offered up naturally, and in...

How To Achieve Enlightenment

In conversation with a friend, I described my previous post. My brush with experiencing consciousness at the level of the Universe. My friend suggested that I write more. I realize that such experiences are truly rare. It could be considered some kind of wondrous gift. Many, perhaps most people live their entire lives without ever experiencing such a vision. And yet there I was, half awake, half asleep, with my consciousness floating somewhere in a distant galaxy, looking back at our planet and realizing that I was completely integrated into all of it, and that everything around me, even to the farthest reaches of the universe, was one with me. The moons of Jupiter were as much a part of me as the very air I breathed; the farthest star no further than the end of my big toe. It was so much more than time and space, however. I read somewhere that Einstein is supposed to have said  that time was God's way of making sure that everything didn't happen at once. But in that mo...

We Are Many Parts

We Are Many Parts is the name of a hymn that I'll be playing in church tomorrow. I'm a trumpet player and occasional visionary. I've been musing on that hymn the last few days. I had something of a vision a couple of weeks ago. I've been wondering about it, and how it fits in with my view of the Universe. Here's what I think. I think everything is connected in ways that we don't quite comprehend yet. I think that we're on the verge of an explosion of comprehension that will rival the Second Coming. Oh, and a whole lot more. Let me talk a bit about the "vision" I had the other day. I was asleep, dreaming. It was quite an amazing dream. Somehow, I don't know how, I could "see" the entire universe. It wasn't seeing, really. It was thinking and knowing. Remember, this was a dream. Part of me knew that I was asleep, or half asleep in my bed. I'm not some sort of wacko nut-case. I'm pretty lucid. Yet there I was,...
